Rumored for some time now, the Oklahoma Co-op brewing facility is now a reality as Brad Stumph, formerly of Black Mesa Brewing, will manage operations where Elk Valley, Angry Scotsman, Vanessa House Brewing Co. Weizensour, Tartmander in Chief featuring hand-drawn artwork from owner Dave Monk. They’re diversifying their portfolio this fall with a fruited sour beer with boysenberries and black currants called Bright D. The latest is Iron Monk’s The Nine, which uses nine hop varieties and the can art represents Aegir, a mythological Norse character who had nine daughters. Those juicy, hop-forward Northeast Coast-style IPAs have been flooding the Oklahoma market. The brewery will open mid- October with 8-12 beers on tap, food trucks and a live band. Head brewer and Siebel graduate Austin McIlroy along with Ryan Arnold have built a visionary brewery named after the cabin retreats that his family and friends take over the summer. While visiting Oktoberfest, you should definitely visit Tulsa’s newest brewery, Cabin Boys Brewing in the Pearl district, and neighboring Marshall Brewing Co. If in town, try seeking out the craft beer tent that features Dead Armadillo, Renaissance Brewing and COOP Ale Works beers. Try dancing with Marshall Brewing Co.’s Oktoberfest, a traditional märzen-style lager with lightly toasted malts balanced with German noble hops. Unsuccessfully locating a duck suit to use with the dance, a local TV station had a chicken suit and thus gained the moniker Chicken Dance. That’s right, the song originated in Switzerland in the 1950s, went through various changes and was reintroduced to the United States in 1981 at Tulsa Oktoberfest. Tulsa hosts one of the top 10 Oktoberfest celebrations in the country with authentic European fare, over 40 unique beers, bands flown in from Germany and rightful founders of naming the chicken dance.
